Preparing your swimming pool for the cooler months is straight forward but very important to do properly to prevent potential issues.

To winterise a pool, you'll need to clean it thoroughly, balance the water, add winterising chemicals, and potentially cover the pool. This process helps prevent algae growth, protects your equipment, and keeps your pool ready for the next swimming season. 

The following 6 tips will help prepare your swimming pool for the winter:

1. Clean the Pool & Equipment: 

• Remove leaves, debris, and any other visible contaminants from the pool surface and bottom using a pool leaf scoop (CSK584-A) or pool shovel (CRK542-A).
• Clean the skimmer and pump baskets from leaves and debris. Using skimmer socks can make cleaning the skimmer basket an easier job.
• Backwash the filter to remove accumulated debris.
• Clean filter media to prevent bacteria build up (Sand Filter 60FAMR300G – Lo-Chlor Filter Aid) (Filter Cartridges 52AQFK500M – Lo-Chlor AQUASPA Instant Filter Klenz)

• Using a water test kit (TKA401) or test strips (511242A) to test and adjust the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels to the recommended ranges. Properly balanced water helps prevent issues like scaling, corrosion, and algae growth during winter.

3. Add Winterising Chemicals:

• Shock the pool with chlorine (20020072 – BioGuard Burn Out) to sanitize the water and eliminate bacteria and algae. 
• Add a winter algaecide (20023220 – BioGuard PolyGard Copper Free) (50WA1L - Lo-Chlor Winteriser Algaecide) to help prevent algae growth during the cooler months. 
• Consider adding a phosphate (20022007 – BioGuard Phos Kill) remover to reduce nutrients that can feed algae. 

4. Cover the Pool (Optional): 

• A pool cover can help reduce debris and evaporation during the winter. Consider a solid cover to block light and further inhibit algae growth.

5. Ongoing Maintenance:

• Even with a cover, it's a good idea to check the pool water chemistry and equipment periodically throughout the winter. 
• Skim the surface and remove any debris that may have accumulated. 

By following these steps, you can effectively winterise your pool and ensure it's ready for swimming when the weather warms up.
